Hi everyone!  I hope everyone got to enjoy the taste of Spring a few days ago and excited for another fun weekend here in NYC.


This weekend check out the New York International Children’s Film Festival, Brooklyn Circus at Brooklyn Children’s Museum, Annual St. Patrick’s Open Day at the Irish Arts Center, Family Workshop: Na’ye Perez at BRIC House, BAM Kids: Song of the North, Virtual Just Kidding: Elena Moon Park and Friends, Picture This! Virtual Tour and Art Workshop: Sculptural Masks, Gather Around the Campfire in McCarren Park, The Pop Ups YouTube Video Premiere, Family Fridays: “Chess Challenge” at National Museum of Mathematics, Seal Exploration in Pelham Bay Park, Library Playdate at NY Public 58th Street Library and Kidz Cook for Pie Day at Staten Island Children’s Museum.

Friday March 11th

Library Playdate at NY Public 58th Street Library (Midtown East)
Fridays 1015-11a until March 25th. Free. This event will take place in person at 58th Street Library. Children ages 2-5 and their caregivers visit the library for unstructured play. This is a great time for the librarian to get to know you and your little ones while also developing socialization and early literacy skills. Patrons must wear a mask in accordance with New York State guidelines and Library protocol. Patrons not wearing a face covering will not be permitted to enter.

The Pop Ups YouTube Video Premiere (virtual)
Friday March 11th 4-445p. Free with RSVP. One ticket per household. For ages 3 to 8y. Catch the pop grooves and high energy of the Grammy-nominated band The Pop Ups as they share a one-of-a-kind virtual performance. Experience drawing with music, hilarious puppets, and an epic costume party just in time for Purim! Hear favorites from their hit albums Giants of Science, Radio Jungle, and more.

Family Fridays: “Chess Challenge” at National Museum of Mathematics (also virtual)
Friday March 11th 630-8p. Free. Register for online here. Register for in-person here. A chess board is full of mathematical secrets and surprises! Join Alisa Melekhina, internationally ranked chess master and world team championship gold medalist, for an evening exploring the mathematical properties of chess. Whether you are a chess or math beginner or you’re already a whiz, your whole family will be able to participate in a puzzle competition involving geometric and coordinate-based chess challenges. You’ll also hear from Alisa, now a practicing corporate litigator, about her journey as a young, female chess player competing at the highest levels through scholastic and international competitions. Chess boards will be set up for casual play during the event. Join us for an engaging, chess-filled evening to challenge, chat, and enjoy!

New York International Children’s Film Festival
Fridays-Sundays until March 19th at various times. For ages 5+ (note virtual tots pass also available). Tickets: $17 general admission, $20 special events. Return to the magic of big screen events with the New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF), North America’s largest film festival for kids and teens, and celebrate their 25th annual festival IN-PERSON. Saturday March 12th

Brooklyn Circus at Brooklyn Children’s Museum (Crown Heights)
Saturday March 12th 10a-1p & 2-5p. Tickets: $13 per person, $12 seniors (children under 1 free). Book tickets here. Join BCM for the inaugural Brooklyn Circus program and immerse yourself in the world of circus arts. Participate in an interactive performance and workshop with The Muse Brooklyn, enjoy bubble play, games, and delectable eats.

Families and Folk Art: The People in Your Neighborhood! (virtual)
Saturday March 12th 10-1045a. Free. Register here. For families with children ages 4 and up. Families will explore examples from the current exhibition, MULTITUDES, at American Folk Art Museum and look at artworks that document and celebrate people in the artists’ own communities and then will create their own. This program combines guided discussion with hands-on, collaborative artmaking. Registrants will be provided with a simple list of materials to assemble before the program so that we can make art together.

Family Workshop: Na’ye Perez at BRIC House (Fort Greene)
Saturday March 12th 11a-2p. Free with RSVP. Advance registration required. Best for ages 5-12. Participants will take inspiration from What you Know Bout Love… by Na’ye Perez, currently on view in the hallway at BRIC House. Together we will look closely at the work and share our thoughts on what we see and how we relate to the imagery. Then, participants will create their own richly textured, vibrant collages of our own communities using a variety of materials. See the website for information on Covid-19 protocols.

Just Kidding: Elena Moon Park and Friends (virtual)
Saturday March 12th 11a. This is a free livetream event. Reserve your spot here. Voyage to East Asia and around the globe as Elena Moon Park & Friends perform reimagined children’s music, folk songs, and original tunes in a variety of languages.

BAM Kids: Song of the North (Fort Greene)
Saturday March 12th 2p & 7p. Tickets begin at $12. Purchase tickets here. For ages 8-14. An inspirational epic from ancient Persia comes to life in this stunning multi-disciplinary performance, created through shadow puppetry, projected animation, music, movement, and theater. 483 handmade puppets are used to tell the story of Manijeh, a courageous heroine who uses her strengths and determination to rescue her beloved and help prevent a war. Adapted from the Book of Kings (Shahnameh), a historical and cultural touchstone that is a national treasure in Iran, Song of the North challenges the Eurocentric worldview of art and storytelling. Carefully crafted for young audiences, it’s a one-of-a-kind multimedia experience that celebrates collaboration, experimentation, and unity.

Sunday March 13th

Picture This! Virtual Tour and Art Workshop: Sculptural Masks
Sunday March 13th 10-11a. Free with RSVP. Ages 4 to 8y. See whimsical objects, striking masks, and imaginative groggers created by artists in the Jewish Museum’s collection for the Purim holiday. Design your own fanciful mask and transform yourself into a character using fabric, cardboard, and other materials you find at home in this special virtual tour and art workshop.

Kidz Cook for Pie Day at Staten Island Children’s Museum
Sunday March 13th 1130a, 12n, 1230p & 215p. Included with Museum admission. Pi – which is written as the Greek letter P, is the relationship between the outline of a circle (circumference) with the line across the middle (diameter). It will always equal a very long decimal number that is shortened to 3.14. In recognition of Pi Day: 3/14, we will be cooking Hand Pies with Ms. Becky. After making your pie, you will be able to take it home with you.

Annual St. Patrick’s Open Day 2022 at the Irish Arts Center (Hell’s Kitchen)
Sunday March 13th 12-330p. Free. You’re very welcome to a whole new Irish Arts Center: an institution transformed in our capacity to entertain, inform, explore, and amaze, but still to our core the same warm, hospitable home. Join us this St. Patrick’s season for a special Open Day with live music and dance, crafts, and a free sampling of our educational offerings. See the website for the schedule of events.

Gather Around the Campfire in McCarren Park
Sunday March 13th 1-2p. Free. Location: Driggs Avenue and Lorimer Street. Registration required. Join the Urban Park Rangers for an afternoon of campfire activities such as stories, songs, and s’mores!

Seal Exploration in Pelham Bay Park
Sunday March 13th 2-3p. Free. Location: Orchard Beach Nature Center. New York City is home to an amazing abundance of wildlife. Our Urban Park Rangers will guide you to the best wildlife viewing spots in the urban jungle. This an amazing time of year to observe seals in the Long Island Sound. You may be surprised by what looks like a rock in the distance, is actually a healthy seal.

All Weekend

Beauty & the Beast at Puppetworks (Park Slope)
Saturdays-Sundays 1230p & 230p until April 3rd. Tickets: Children $10 each, Adults $11 each. Suggested for 3 and up. Beauty & the Beast, the French Fantasy with a “live” Beast adapted for Marionettes by Nicolas Coppola. New York City requires you to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter Puppetworks. Those 12 years of age and older must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Masks are required.

Wake Up, Daisy! at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre (Central Park)
Fridays-Sundays 11-1145 (doors 1030a) & 1-145p (doors 1230p) until 12/31/22. Tickets: $12 adult, $8 child. Purchase tickets here. Location: 79th Street and West Drive Central Park. Wake Up, Daisy! tells the story of Daisy, a lively little girl living in the heart of New York City in an apartment overlooking Central Park. At Daisy’s much-anticipated birthday party, she encounters three special guests, known as her “Squad-parents”, from Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx who grant her the gifts of courage, knowledge, and a second chance. When an unwelcome guest shows up and casts a curse on her, Daisy’s life is forever changed. But through the support of her friends and an adventure throughout the city, Daisy’s strong self-determination and vivid imagination may be all she needs to break the curse.

1885 Tall Ship Wavertree Free Tour at South Street Seaport
Saturdays-Sundays 11a-5p until April 30th. Free. The permanently-moored 1885 tall ship Wavertree is open to the public for FREE on Saturdays and Sundays, with timed entry, at Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets). Guided tours depart hourly and last approximately 30 minutes. Advance reservations are recommended. Guided tours include access to the main deck and quarter deck. Learn how people worked and lived aboard a 19th century cargo sailing vessel, from the captain to the ship’s officers, cooks, and crew. Then visit the cargo hold and stand atop the viewing platform where you can take in the massive main cargo area. Proof of vaccine required for all guests over age 5. Masks required.

Sharks at the American Museum of Natural History (UWS)
Museum hours Wednesday-Sunday 10a-530p. Included in General Admission+One. See website for all the details.The new exhibition Sharks features dozens of life-sized models ranging from 33 feet to 5.5 inches long, fossils from the Museum’s collections, touch-free interactive exhibits that challenge visitors to hunt like a hammerhead, and more for visitors of all ages. Older than dinosaurs—and more threatened than threatening—sharks are spectacular, surprising, and often misunderstood. Discover the incredible diversity of this ancient and fascinating group of fishes. Note: In accordance with the New York City vaccine requirement, you must be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the Museum.

Ice Skating at LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
Hours for covered rink: Monday-Thursday 9a-430p, Friday 9a-7p, Saturday 1-9p, Sunday 1-430p until April 3rd. Open air rink hours: 9a-7p, Friday-Saturday 9a-9p & Sunday 9a-7p. Admission rates: $8 weekday per person, $12 weekend per person. Reserve your desired 90-minute skate session for access to one of our two available ice rinks online now and guarantee your ice time. Skate rentals are available at an additional cost or feel free to bring your own skates. Purchase online today as capacity is limited. To help our young skaters, helpful Skate Aids are available and can be rented in advance or on the day of your visit, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Ice Skating at Winter Village in Bryant Park
Open daily until March 6th. Hours: Monday-Thursday 8a-10p, Friday-Sunday and holidays 8a-1130p. Winter Village at Bryant Park is Manhattan’s winter wonderland. Enjoy New York City’s only free admission ice skating rink, the Holiday Shops, and rinkside eats and drinks at The Lodge by Prime Video. Reserve timed entry tickets here.
