Samsung’s new 50-megapixel camera sensor has the smallest pixels yet

Samsung is pushing the limits once more on pixel dimensions with its most recent smartphone camera sensor. The Isocell JN1 suits fifty megapixels into a little 1/two.seventy six-inch format for a pixel dimensions of just .sixty four micrometers. That’s noticeably smaller than the .7 micrometer pixels identified on its 43.7-megapixel Isocell Slender GH1 sensor produced again in 2019. “The new Isocell JN1 at .64μm will be in a position to equip tomorrow’s sleekest smartphones with ultra-higher resolution mobile photographs,” reported Samsung Electronics executive VP Duckhyun Chang.

The little sensor dimensions will be valuable for multi-camera setups, permitting smartphone designers use the sensor for front-facing, ultra-wide, telephoto or common cameras, depending on the setup and resolution demanded. It will also lessen camera module thicknesses by around 10 %, Samsung reported.

The challenge with little pixels is that they cannot acquire as significantly light-weight as more substantial pixels. So, for minimal light-weight shooting, the sensor combines four pixels in a single, boosting light-weight by four moments while cutting down the sensor resolution to 12.5 megapixels. On best of that, it uses Samsung’s new Isocell two. tech that replaces metallic obstacles in between coloration filters with a content that decreases light-weight decline, boosting sensitivity up to 16 %.

The new sensor also incorporates Samsung’s “double super PD” (phase detect) autofocus with two moments the phase detect pixel density, improving upon AF general performance in minimal-light-weight situations. The new sensor also supports 4K online video at 60 fps or entire Hd at 240 fps. Samsung reported the JN1 is now in mass generation, so hope it to appear in new smartphones before long.
